Dr Rumena Filipova interviewed by Bloomberg TV Bulgaria on the new US National Security Strategy and Europe’s role.

In her appearance on “In Development” with Georgi Mesrobovich, Dr Filipova discussed why the latest US National Security Strategy does not advocate disengagement from Europe — but instead calls for greater European responsibility.

She highlighted several core insights:

  • Europe remains vital for Washington, but some states may soon lack the capacity to be reliable allies.
  • European alarmism is misplaced — US criticisms should be met with rational self-reflection, not emotion.
  • NATO enlargement has never been automatic, but the outcome of long-term diplomatic efforts and reforms.
  • The impact on Ukraine is limited — positions remain unchanged, while Europe still struggles to articulate concrete support.
  • Europe faces internal pressures, from fiscal constraints and defence needs to generational tensions over sustaining the welfare state.
  • This is not a classic Cold War 2.0, but a world shaped by emerging regional powers and deep global interdependence.
