New CEIAS report released: Partners in need, partners indeed? Tracking Europe–Taiwan relations amidst global disruption

IGA is pleased to highlight the contribution of Dr Rumena Filipova to a comprehensive study led by the Central European Institute of Asian Studies, which offers the first systematic, bottom-up analysis of Europe-Taiwan relations across 30 European countries and EU institutions. In her chapter, Dr Filipova examines the state of Bulgarian-Taiwanese relations, tracing recent developments and persistent constraints.

Key findings:
  • Recent years have seen a relative increase in economic engagement and broader societal cooperation between Bulgaria and Taiwan.
  • Nevertheless, the relationship continues to evolve within the limits of low political awareness in Bulgaria and limited public focus on the Indo-Pacific, which narrows the scope for deeper bilateral ties.
The report categorises countries by the depth of their engagement with Taiwan, analyses political, economic, parliamentary, and cultural links, and provides policy-relevant recommendations for European partners and Taiwan.
