In her new article for Eurozine, Dr. Rumena Filipova assesses the state of democracy in Bulgaria in the context of the fifth election in two years. The foreign policy implications of the domestic impasse include a degree of self-isolation, insufficient European integration and perception of the country as a challenge to regional and allied security. Susceptibility to Russian influence and lack of awareness of the threat from China complete the mix. The paper includes recommendations for reinvigorating democracy outside of the election mode.
