In an interview with Roselina Petkova for Bloomberg TV Bulgaria, Dr Rumena Filipova discussed the recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping and what it reveals about the trajectory of US-China relations. She argued that the meeting can be understood as an attempt to maintain communication and gradually establish mechanisms for managing relations between the two countries.
The discussion focused on several key issues:
- strategic stability and the importance of maintaining communication between Washington and Beijing;
- the operational work of the Board of Trade and the continuation of trade negotiations;
- the creation of a channel for communication on artificial intelligence, an increasingly important area of both cooperation and strategic competition;
- Taiwan, which remained a sensitive issue despite not being directly addressed in the public statements surrounding the meeting; and
- the continued US-China competition over critical technologies, which is unlikely to be fundamentally affected by the latest trade concessions.
